The perfect match of MD5 checksum value ensures that the digital integrity and security of a file has not been broken by someone else and also that it is the accurate copy of the original file. Downloaded a page from Wikipedia via wget on remote server and named the file test.dat. Then I executed md5sum. I download the file via HTTP and check it back on my home computer. The checksum does not match. When I download the same file via SCP the checksum matches. If the checksum computed for the downloaded resource does not match at least one checksum displayed on the page then the user is warned. The authors also studied the behaviour of participants when downloading files using the extension. 40% of the participants stopped when shown the warning message for the corrupted download.

That's the fail message - it only goes on to ask if you want to "ignore and continue", or cancel. At first, I checked the MD5 checksums with a live Puppy Linux cd (I only had a program in Windows which does one file at a time and I only knew how to do the command line command to check against a big list in Puppy).
